On Thursday, June 12, ZEBx will be hosting its 3rd building tour of 2025. Located in Vancouver, the Chief Leonard George building sets the gold standard for Indigenous housing. The project entails a redevelopment of an existing three-storey building, which previously offered 27 affordable rental suites for urban Indigenous singles and families and is currently under construction. The redevelopment will be designed to enhance the density, efficiency, and cultural value of housing on the site through a Passive House, Mass Timber, cedar basket-inspired apartment building consisting of 81 affordable rental units across 9 storeys, with a mix of studio, one-, two-, three-, and four-bedroom layouts with on-site community amenities include a daycare and community garden. This development will support the City’s sustainability goals, provide a striking visual reminder of the historic cultural practices of the Indigenous peoples who have called these lands home, and ensure the project will have the greatest impact on providing the quality affordable housing so desperately needed by the city’s Indigenous community.

Registration begins at 3:30pm and the presentation and tour begins at 4pm.

Note that this tour is taking place in an active construction site with uneven ground. Personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hats, steel-toed shoes/boots, and a high-visibility vest are required to attend the tour. A completed liability form is required upon registration to participate.

Presentations will be provided by the general contractor, architect, building science consultant and mechanical consultant. Dependent on approval, AIBC and BC Housing continuing education credits can be claimed for attending the tour.
