About this event

To many, building to BC Energy Step Code 4 and BC Zero Carbon Step Code Emissions Level (EL) 4 for Part 9 homes can seem ambitious — especially in the cold, cost-conscious East Kootenays. Yet real-world experience shows that high-performance, low-carbon homes can be built cost-effectively, comfortably, and reliably when design, construction, and energy advising work hand in hand.

In this Decarb Lunch, Bruce Murdoch of Kootenay Country Homes will share insights from two recent net-zero projects that demonstrate what’s possible when performance and practicality align — from right-sizing mechanical systems to building crew capacity and maintaining cost control. His story also highlights his personal journey from early hesitation to confident leadership in high-performance homebuilding, showing how hands-on experience can transform uncertainty into trust in better building practices.

Complementing this perspective, Kevin D. Brown, a Passive House designer and consultant, will draw on his experience delivering energy-efficient and low-carbon homes across Alberta and BC. He’ll offer proven strategies for achieving strong energy performance and emissions reductions without breaking budgets — emphasizing the importance of early collaboration and integrated design.

Join us to hear how builders and designers are proving that Step 4 + EL-4 performance is achievable, cost-effective, and ready for mainstream adoption in communities across BC.

Speakers:

Bruce Murdoch, Owner, K-Country Homes
