This event is an official collaboration with the Carbon Leadership Forum – Vancouver (CLF Vancouver). It is rescheduled from Nov 2021.
Overview
The monthly ZEBx Decarb Lunch brings together the local building community to discuss emerging solutions and barriers related to zero emission buildings.
Happening this Month
Reducing Embodied Carbon for Step Code Homes
As we move up the BC Energy Step Code ladder while cutting back on operational emissions, we can’t lose sight of embodied carbon when selecting the components and materials for new buildings. Without considering embodied carbon, more energy-efficient homes could still contribute to global warming – with most of the impact occurring before the homeowner moves in! To help you make the right choices, ZEBx and CLF Vancouver are collaborating on the next Decarb Lunch focused on the lessons learned from a study of 34 step code homes.
Speakers
Natalie Douglas, Climate Change Planning Assistant, Embodied Carbon Pilot Coordinator, Development Services, City of Nelson
As the Embodied Carbon Pilot Coordinator at the City of Nelson, Natalie has been working to highlight the importance of reducing consumption-based emissions, like material carbon emissions in buildings (i.e. embodied carbon), and bridge this with existing work to reduce operational emissions. Natalie’s background in environmental science and urban planning, research experience on the topic of consumption-based emissions, and professional project management experience has provided the foundation for her work at the City of Nelson. As someone with a long-standing interest in climate-resiliency, data visualization, and science communication, Natalie is incredibly grateful to be working in this field.
Chris Magwood, Director of Programs, Research & Policy, Endeavour Centre
Chris Magwood is obsessed with helping reverse climate change by making carbon-storing buildings that are also healthy, beautiful, efficient and inspiring. Since 2011, Chris has been a director and teacher at The Endeavour Centre, a not-for-profit sustainable building school in Peterborough, Ontario. The school runs a full-time certificate program – Sustainable Building and Design – and hosts dozens of hands-on workshops annually.
In 2019, he helped to establish Builders for Climate Action, and has been leading development of the BEAM carbon estimator tool for low rise construction. He is working closely with many levels of government to develop embodied carbon benchmarks and regulatory programs, and helping developers and builders figure out how to reverse climate change with their buildings. Chris is an active speaker and workshop instructor in Canada and internationally.
