Back by popular demand! Apply today for a virtual session of BCIT’s Fundamentals of Zero Energy/Emissions and Passive House Buildings course in Spring 2026. This multi-session course will be offered online and free for eligible participants!

Offered by BCIT, this course will help learners build practical knowledge to support resilient housing. Learn about net zero energy, zero emissions and Passive House buildings using real-world case studies.

Students will learn about international, national and provincial zero energy/emissions buildings codes and standards. They will also develop an understanding of net zero energy/emissions buildings principles, building science, systems, materials and cost. This course provides a strong foundation for future zero energy/emissions building courses.  

This course is part of the Essentials of Net-Zero and Passive House Construction Micro-credential. After completing this course, participants can choose to continue and complete the Micro-credential. 

What will you learn?

  • Principles of building science, energy use and carbon reduction

  • Emerging practices related to materials and assemblies 

  • Common mechanical and electrical systems

  • Evaluating materials and costs

Virtual course schedule:

The course will be delivered over eight 3-hour online sessions, plus 3-4 hours of independent learning activities and assignments each week:

  • Wednesday, April 1, from 1pm – 4pm 

  • Wednesday, April 15, from 1pm – 4pm 

  • Wednesday, April 29, from 1pm – 4pm 

  • Wednesday, May 6, from 1pm – 4pm 

  • Wednesday, May 20 from 1pm – 4pm 

  • Wednesday, June 3, from 1pm – 4pm 

  • Wednesday, June 17, from 1pm – 4pm 

  • Wednesday, June 24 from 1pm – 4pm 

You must be available for the online sessions on the specified dates and times to successfully complete the course. 

Who should sign up:

Eligible participants include: 

  • BC First Nations community housing or energy staff 

  • BC Indigenous housing society staff

  • BC First Nations community members, including youth, who are interested in a career in the housing or energy sectors 

  • Contractors currently working for BC First Nations on housing or energy projects 

The virtual course is FREE for eligible participants.
